Vanino - Kholmsk (Russia)Connects Transsib and Sakhalin across the Tatar Strait. Opened in 1974. The ferry fleet of 10 ships (two of them have been built about 15 years ago, the other 8 -- later; they are called Sakhalin-1, Sakhalin-2, etc). Sakhalin-1, Sakhalin-3 and Sakhalin-5 were scrapped in 1997. The Sakhalin-2 was not reported scrapped, but was already deleted in the Lloyd's Register of ships in 1997.Have a look at the pictures of the ferries taken by Valentin Shinkariov and sent by Yury Boldyrev:
Baku (Azerbaijan) - Turkmenbashi (Turkmenistan)![]() The ferry works regularly (when there is some freight). There are 6 vessels (2 broken occupied to be repaired), two more (Mercury-1 and Mercury-2) have been constructed in 1998 in Kaliningrad. Azerbaijan is the owner of these ferries. It is impossible to work (arrival/departure) during the night in Turkmenbashi because the balises are broken.
Krym (Ukraine) - Kavkaz (Russia)Connects Russia and the Ukraine across the Kerch Strait. Now defunct.In Summer 2002, "Sakhalin-6" ferry vessel was moved from Sakhalin island to Kerch. Her function is still unknown.
Ilyichevsk (Ukraine) - Varna (Bulgaria)Connects the Ukraine and Bulgaria across the Black sea.
Klaipeda (Lithuania) - Mukran (Germany)Connects Lithuania and Germany (former GDR) across the Baltic sea. Served by two shipping lines: Deutsche Seerederei Touristik and LISCO.Contact Information:

Севастополя" станет первым судном, отчалившем от железнодорожного
терминала в Потийском порту 17 апреля в ходе праздничной церемонии
открытия железнодорожной паромной переправы Поти - Ильичевск. Об этом
BLACK SEA PRESS сообщили в министерстве транспорта Грузии. Паром,
вмещающий 108 вагонов (около трех железнодорожных составов), на первом
этапе будет осуществлять рейсы между Поти и украинским портом
Ильичевск раз в неделю. В дальнейшем планируется задействовать
кольцевой паромный маршрут Варна-Батуми-Поти-Ильичевск, который будет
обслуживаться двумя болгарскими и двумя украинскими железнодорожными
паромами.
In September 2000, a new line of Black Sea railway ferries has been
opened, from Constanta (Romania) to Poti and Batumi (Georgia).
Makhachkala (Russia) - Baku (Azerbaijan) - Noushahr (Iran)Opened in July 1997. One of the vessels is named "Dagestan".
Aktau (Kazakhstan) - Baku (Azerbaijan)On February 2, 2000, the operation will resume after a long period of conservation, but in car/passenger mode only (no rail operations, because the terminal at Aktau is reportedly in very bad condition). The restoration of railway traffic will begin in May 2000 and continue for another 8 months.
