...Railways span across Japan. The are as omnipresent as a crime, and as inevitable as a punishment. They are such an indivisible part of a Japanese landscape as Mount Fuji. In my office, there is a poster showing a Shinkansen train with Mount Fuji in background -- they look as if they were carved of a single piece of stuff! It's hard to believe that Mount Fuji existed before the construction of the railway...
