Azerbaijani Court Convicts Two in Metro Fire
The Supreme Court of Azerbaijan convicted two men for a 1995 fire in a city metro that killed more than 200.
Judges sentenced the metro operator to 15 years in prison and the station traffic-controller to 10 years. The fire that broke out on a metro car in the capital city Baku on October 29 claimed the lives of 292 people and injured another 168.
Officials attributed the cause of the blaze to technical problems. Relatives of those convicted said the blame for the accident should have been placed on the metro's managers, who were responsible for the technical condition of the coaches.
